I think my brain is scrambled from trying to find things and unpack a bit this morning, but really that picture just makes me ask, "Why does Jack have two hats?" Is he a hat hog? I thought it might be Mac's, but no, he's got his own.

I take it that this is a reuse of an invention from Mac's childhood, because at the rate he comes up with things, I'm sure that he was well beyond #582 by the time he was in his late thirties!

Given my wallet travails last week, Mac would have needed a considerably longer stick, something like ten miles longer, or is that some sort of telescoping wonder material? Perhaps it only works on a fool and his money, and not a fool and her money?

He must have come up with this one shortly after meeting Jack Dalton -- which was back when they were kids.

As for your experience, you didn't strike me as a fool, so clearly a different measure would have been needed. Maybe a telescoping rule to track the rapidly growing distance between a harrassed mother and her sanity?
