I read Phoenix Rising, but I thought the awful shirt he wore in that story was tie-dye, borrowed from a friend, and too small for him. Did he go out and buy this one somewhere in the course of the story?

There was more than one awful shirt in the story. ;-) I had him buy the shirt while he was in the Bay Area. Jason gave him a hard time about it, and Mac said something on the order of "I can't believe I'm getting this from a guy who wears orange and yellow tie-dye." At the very end of the story, he threatened to wear the same shirt to Jason's wedding.
And yes, his shirts are much too loose! And too buttoned!
