Michael Shanks has a lovely story about this particular scene, in which he's delivering a looong expositional monologue, for which he hadn't quite prepared well enough -- which was shot in one long continuous take. No opportunity to deal with the long speech by breaking the scene and picking it up again.
Shanks had an awful time while the scene was being shot; he said that his gesticulations got so crazy that he looked as if he was trying to fly. And RDA, who usually jokes and pranks evey moment that the camera isn't running, became more and more subdued through each take, so as not to break Shanks' concentration.
It was a lovely backstage story, and you can see the whole thing in this screencap!
