Um, is Mac saying this to the viewer? Or you saying to Mac? Because watching that screen cap I really find something disturbing.

Why is the 6x2 and the 3x10 in brackets? There shouldn't need to be brackets. Everyone knows that x comes first.

Or do you mean the last line? I don't see enough of it but if it is really 2x12-4=22 then yeah, THAT'S disturbing!

Don't worry, it says 2x12-4=20 (there's a long tail on the 0). It was a stupid episode, but not QUITE that stupid!

I was always taught to write sums like that with brackets...

I mean, when you have an x (or / )and an + (or -) in an equation, the x always comes first. So you only need the brackets if you want the + to come first. But since the x comes first anyway, there is no reason to put brackets on. It's like belt and braces.

1+2x3=7 because 2x3=6+1=7

but (1+2)x3=9

And there are many calculators out there which do it wrong if you enter it like in my first equation. But the one I have recognizes that it should do the 2x3 first and then add 1, it does not immediately jump to 3 after the 1+2 but waits for what's coming next.

The caption is a parody of a line from Star Wars: "I find your lack of faith disturbing." The line has become very popular as a joke in the last few years, with all the hysterical religious nutcases in this country (most of whom are also really bad at math). I thought it worked especially well with Mac's dubious expression.

With the brackets, I think they may have been trying to make them look uniform. The brackets are required for the third line, (10 + 8) / 6, and optional for the others.

I'm pretty sure they already were. Today, for example, is numbered 07.27.2010 in one widely used system. ;-)
