I think the Fashion Gods in the ascendency during that decade were evil, malicious, arbitrary gods -- the kind that cause random cataclysms and chop up their progeny (or their forebears).

Another possibility is that they were in fact Nuggan, who had been demoted to Fashion god after the garlic- and chocolate- less people rebelled, and just did his thing...
