You cannot honestly expect me to form an adequate verbal response to that photo. Gah, I think I am having a cardiac event.

We used to play field hockey in the summer all the time. I was never any good at it, but it was also a sport at school, so I at least tried. Although I do have to say we never played with huge gloves like that. :)

I think that's floor hockey. Which is ice hockey without ice. As opposed to indoor hockey which is field hockey but inside. The stick is different.

I got big gloves when I played field hockey because I was the goalie.

We moved to Ann Arbor in 1980 so my husband could go to med school there, and I enrolled in grad school. It was an Olympic year and someone showed up as we were waiting for my Latin class to start and said, "Did you see that weird sport they had on the Olympics last night?" Everyone else chimed in about it. They were all wonderfully amused by this strange, obscure sport they'd never heard of, kind of like hockey, but it was played outside on grass and you were only allowed to use one side of the stick! Having played field hockey from a tender age, I couldn't believe that they didn't have a clue about the sport! I knew I was back home when we got back to Vermont for my husband's internship and residency, and the high school girls' (and college womens') field hockey scores were listed on screen during the nightly news as God intended. ;)

OMGosh really!?!! Hee! I was raised in Michigan and we always played field hockey when I was a kid. (That and Four Square in the middle of the street & kick ball). Surely those students must have been from somewhere other than the Great Lake State!!

Either that, or they don't play that in schools nowadays... God, that makes me feel so old!!! :)

Well the expression of the lady in the background of this icon was how I felt about it at the time, but nope, they were all native Michiganders. I got the impression that most of them were Detroit suburbs raised, though, and not necessarily the toniest of the suburbs, so that may have affected it.

It probably was a part of it, I suppose. I lived in the city of Detroit throughout most of my childhood, although we did live in some of the suburbs too. I guess I always thought everyone knew about field hockey!

Well, your comments have restored my faith in the state of sport in Michigan! I was sooo surprised at the time. I assumed everyone knew about field hockey too!

We can tell he's confused. He's wearing long pants to play hockey in the California heat, when obviously the situation calls for shorts, the shorter the better.

Nah. That's the still-a-boy-just-a-BIG-one aspect of RDA. My kids would play hockey on the carpet if we didn't come in and yell at them for it. Obviously RDA forgot to pack his mom along in those years.
