Interbreeding might seem somewhat unlikely, provided the wild shirts have the characteristic tendency of most creatures in that they reject otherwise sound individuals with abnormal coloration.
But given that this is southern California, the indigenous wild shirts have probably already been tainted with occasional strains of escaped polyesters. If you hadn't rescued those mullets, they might have cross-bred with the local seaweed by now.
Yeah, I'm originally from SoCa, so I know just what happened with the botched Polyester Integration Experiment. That was a result of too many research grants being handed out indiscriminately to "scientists", whom I suspect had sampled some of the local vegetation prior to the release of the test subjects...you don't *really* think those polyesters got out all on their own?
Given how lazy and sluggish the average polyester is, I can well believe it; they rarely leave their cages unless tempted with deep-fried treats or threatened with irons. I personally suspect it was the work of bored graduate students. Or possibly eco-terrorists.
The worst part of it is, knowing how little Daniel loves taking up lost causes, I'm afraid my cartoon kid is going to come home with a rescued shirt...(evil plot bunny looming!). Stay tuned.
