Second this theory. I think Daniel is looking at the most recent unlikely and completely ridiculous "love interest" the Plot has thrown at him with mild apprehension/horror and Jack is looking at the Daniel because rawr. This is my story and I stick to it.

I'm pretty sure the plot does, in fact, become complicated. The plot complication might be intractable or impenetrable or implausible, but I doubt that it's imaginary.

It is most certainly off-camera.
