It was their own fault... They didn't want him to lie down, they wanted the truth. And when the hypnotising with a watch didn't work quite work out, Mac just toppled over... One of them went through the checklist and realised he'd forgotten to tick off the box 'tie to wall/tree/whatever is available' "I wonder what makes him tick." "that's not him, that's the watch. It fell off."
Of course when they get disgusted and leave him in the room for a bit, he'll be using his watch as the timer for the detonator he'll use to blow the door and escape...
They're going to be standing there berating each other (because because that box next to "tie to wall/tree/whatever is available" still isn't ticked) and forgetting to chase him.
