I hear they caught him in the wig and powder van, reviewing his notes for the make-up test... *g*

I disagree with the alt text. It is the props' duty to maintain historical accuracy for as long as possible. What are they getting paid for then?!

A Chance Encounter

Daniel Jackson stepped out of the Administrative Offices, still working on pinning the laminated Visiting Scholar tag to the chest of his plaid flannel shirt, and sighed with contentment. Two days here looking over the University's collection, and then three... no, four, if he worked Saturday... days in the nirvana of the University's grad library, and no Jack O'Neill. Whatever demon had been riding Jack lately, and Daniel had no clue which of many it was, had made Jack extra snarky, and a great number of his most barbed comments had seemed to land squarely between Daniel's eyes. The man had good aim. Well, Daniel had a week away, and he intended to make the most of it. Hopefully Jack would have laid that demon to rest by the time he got back to Colorado.

For several minutes Daniel drifted from room to room, mostly just getting an initial feel for the range and depth of the collections while keeping an eye out for any pieces that might shed some light on alien presence among the Tau'ri. He doubted he would find any, but he'd been surprised before.

He rounded a corner, and sighed again, this time with resignation. A docent was taking a tour around, and Daniel frequently found these occasions intolerable. It never ceased to amaze him how many docents seemed to be ill-informed, and how enthusiastically they misinformed their charges. Daniel could never stand to see the truth being abused. He supposed he would have to tag along and prevent some of the most egregious misinformation from spreading.

Two rooms later (two rooms further on than he had expected) Daniel was just raising a finger to call attention to himself so he could correct an error, when a strong, confident, and very, very familiar voice rang out from just behind him. Daniel whirled around with his mouth agape to see Jack O'Neill... but not. Definitely not. The voice was identical right down to the thick Minnesotan accent, but the face was not. No eyebrow scar. Lighter, longer hair in a style that Jack would have excoriated. Blue jeans, yes, but half as baggy as Jack would have picked out, and one of the most outrageous Hawaiian shirts Daniel had ever seen. Even Teal'c would have rejected that one as being too over-the-top!

"I keep telling Professor Macomber that this piece is a fake!" the man was saying. "It really shouldn't be out here with the rest of the exhibition. The other objects were excavated and have flawless provenances, and this was bought by a collector on the black market. While the metallurgical analysis of the piece are compatible with other authentic pieces, an expert forger can manipulate that, and the fact that the master of beasts motif has never been found outside of Pre-Dynastic and Early Dynastic pieces, and yet we see it here with an acanthus motif that is taken straight from Hellenizing pieces of similar shape and function, should be a dead give away that this is a fake!"

The poor little docent was silent, lacking both the ammunition to return fire, and entirely unsure of the bone fides of the outspoken and colorful figure who had spoken.

Daniel took advantage of the vacuum.

"Ummm..." he said, pushing up his glasses, "Who are you?"

The man smiled engagingly and stuck out a hand.

"MacGyver. My friends call me Mac."

Daniel shook the offered hand. "Daniel Jackson. You pointed out just what I was going to say. Are you by any chance related to a Colonel Jack O'Neill?"

"Nope. Not that I know of, anyway. Why?"

Daniel shook his head in bemusement.

"Nevermind," he said. "Who did you study with?"

The two men moved off, deep in a discussion of professors and mentors, and the docent, with a sigh of relief of her own, resumed the tour.
