As they approached it became clear that what they had taken to be a large city in the distance was in fact a very tiny city only a few short yards away. Mac immediately went to kneel down in the clover-dotted grass near the edge of the city, and quickly decided that it must have been constructed as a practical miniature for some television production, and abandoned there when shooting was done. Hours and hours of delicate work abandoned to clutter the natural scene, no doubt to save the expense of disassembling and removing it. He explained this to the hungry and disappointed teens and urged them not to give up hope.

"Look around guys!" he said, "A model this big and this intricate could not have gotten out here without several trucks to get it here. Cast around for tire tracks or a cleared path through the forest, and we can follow it right out to civilization!"

This put heart back into the group, and Mac was thrilled to notice that the kids were working as a team without any regard for gang affiliations. Maybe this trip would do what he had wanted it to after all.

He made a mental note to himself that when they had found their way home, he would need to convince Pete of the importance of sending out a fleet of trucks to dismantle the set and take it away. No sense in leaving an environmental eyesore out in the pristine forest.

As he began to move away to investigate what two of the teen were insisting was a trail of broken branches, he stopped suddenly, feeling subliminally that he had heard something.

If he didn't know better, he could have sworn that it was a chorus of impossibly high, thin voices:

"We are here! We are here! We are HERE!" it almost sounded like. Nah. Couldn't be. Impossible! Must have been mosquitos or something.

Attempting ineffectually to clean each ear in turn with its corresponding index finger, Mac moved away.

Huh. I did that just yesterday after a trip to the mailbox! :)

Oh, and no, I haven't forgotten the sitcom. It's percolating. Of course by the time it comes through, the anticipation will be such that anything I come up with will probably register like a pancake with the baking powder left out by mistake...
