...seriously, I probably would. I have a weakness for dogs. They almost never hurt my feelings.
I actually had a dream, the night before Christmas, I believe, or some day like that, that RDA was my uncle and he gave me a puppy. He also had an awesome sweater.
Seriously, I wouldn't see it as a concern. The particularly complex characters create mental images, with multiple aspects; and that very complexity is part of what makes them such a draw, after all. One can have an emotional crush, a physical crush, fantasies of sharing adventures, a wish for a familial relationship, a strong desire just to hang out and be friends -- any or all of them at different times, changing according to our own changing internal landscape.
If you go right into the visceral level of our need for stories and storytelling -- we have always had this need, for beings of imagination with whom we can have these multilayered internal relationships. That's why we create them, devote so much time and energy to them, maintain them. We've been doing it for millenia, using whatever media we had available.
I love philosophical ramblings! Hence why one of my majors is philosophy... though many other philosophy majors are entirely too self-assured for my tastes.
Anyway, digressing from that potential vent...
I definitely agree with that sentiment and notion. As Daniel goes on about a fair bit, mythology is very important to the development of culture. Much like dreams, they're the dreams we share with one another and thereby create cooperative reasoning and rapport with others. Whether certain mythologies are true, all are false, or all are true, it makes little difference in day-to-day life. The important thing is that they exist, regardless of "truth value".
Furthermore, I find this very interesting with Stargate because of a conversation I had with a Canadian friend once about how, in spite of it being a "Canadian-American" show that she viewed the premise, plot, characters, all of it, as being "American mythology". Meaning that in spite of its drawing from other mythologies, or perhaps because of it, the flavor that Stargate has that tends to leave someone on the palate, even when individual episodes aren't necessarily profound, is a kind of thing that is distinctly American. Americans may not notice it, according to my friend, because we live in it all the time, but the Star Trek/Stargate notion of some strange mixture of peaceful, progressive, politically correct expansion (a modified form of Manifest Destiny) and the old school "Take what you can, give nothing back" approach to the same thing are all a part of Stargate that feels like a very natural concern to an American but not so much to people of other cultures.
Anyway. I can explain that more later, and I'm not sure how sound it is, but I think it's a very neat and kind of warm-fuzzy thought.
But, it's good to know that dreaming of people (places/things/ideas) we like (love/adore/hanker for) isn't a bad thing. I dream about zombie and tornado hunting all the time (not in the same dream...yet).
I've also gotten the general ideas for my last 2 stories from dreams. Most are just bursts of scene, some play out longer and in more detail (keep your minds out of the gutter...you know who you are). Besides, it's always nice to have a good dream after a hard day. Getting a hug from a person you look up to, even in dream form, can lift one's spirits enough to get them out of bed the next day.
It's a Shiba Inu, and that particular one belonged to a child who was dying. She wanted her dog to be on TV as part of the Make A Wish program. I can't remember his name right now, but if you give me a minute, I'll remember...
Do your research and then decide. They are cute, but they are an Asian breed. Like all Asian breeds, they are not generally the, um, most gregarious. They are not mean by nature or anything like that (neither are most of the other Asian breeds), but as Asian breeds, they need a bit different upbringing than most (which most don't get) if you want the best chance at the cuddly bit of fur most people want in a pet.
Well, I would like to have one, but right now I'm living in a dorm where dogs aren't allowed and I have a dog that doesn't like me anymore most of the time at my parents house. My theory is that she doesn't like me because I left her, and now when I come back, she's jealous of my parents' attention. She liked me a fair bit while I was there over Christmas break, but she's gone back to her jealous rages again, haha...
And I just think they're beautiful...
Although, I'd never really heard anything particular about Asian vs European/Whatever breeds being terribly different.
When not saving the world and writing drabbles, wabbit's secret identity is a veterinary surgeon. She's a superb source of information on animals in general and dogs in particular -- she helped me avoid several embarrassing mistakes when I was writing "Aftershocks" and needed a dog to behave realistically.
*whines* I wanna be a proper grown-up with an actual job and career, instead of being a little peon!
Maybe not-whining would be a good step in that direction.
My best friend (whom I can't see anymore, due to not being a proper grown-up and her not being one at all) wants to be a vet of some kind.
And this is very good information to know.
I don't know how realistically I could write dog behavior, but my mom says I do a pretty good impression of a dog's internal monologue when I'm in such a mood as to try.
Hey! Some of us peons prefer to be called *lemmings*
But, I do feel the same way about wanting a real career. I tried -- I really did -- but my body just didn't want me to become the cop I wanted to be (or even military for that matter).
I'd love to work with critters -- they really are superior to humans (well, I can think of at least 2 people I'd like to be around...) If only they vet tech on-the-job training...
>: I'm sorry that didn't work out. I'm concerned about similar things with my body not cooperating, but I'm going to keep trying until that option is exhausted.
And I wish many things did on-the-job training. I like being educated, but I don't like waiting so much.
It's true. Asian breeds (Chows, Shar Peis, Shibas, etc.) are not known for friendliness. That's not to say that they are mean or anything, but they are, shall we say, sensibly reserved. They are known for being aloof.
In a groundbreaking behavioral genetics study a few years back, Golden Retrievers and Shiba Inus were compared genetically for genes influencing personality. (We have sequenced the canine genome now, so we can do such things.) It was found that the breeds were decidedly different in this regard. Shibas were decidedly lacking the the "friendliness" genes compared to Goldens. That said, I personally can't stand idiot Goldens and Labs who think everyone should love them, so...aloof works for me.
I was just saying don't go for looks. Do your research.
My dog is very strange. She's incredibly self-willed and is a whole lot of bark, but once she has determined you to be no immediate threat, she kind of edges closer to that stupid everyone-should-love-me thing.
She stands very aloof from me nowadays, though, because she doesn't like that I leave her all week.
And I love stuff like that, reading about it that is. Too bad my mind simply doesn't work in those directions at all...
However, I can say from experience that Labs can get on the nerves pretty quickly.

I'm actually not sure if there was a distinction about whether Jack was my uncle or if it was just RDA, or vice versa.
I had a dream about Supernatural characters the other night. Thankfully, I don't think I've developed crushes on them yet.
