Okay. Most of my fic (so far) is MacGyver fic, but there is some Stargate as well. Most of the Stargate stuff is very short and madly cracky. (You’re very surprised at this, I’m sure.)

Yay! Fic! Thanks! (I'd signed up to write an X-Files crossover for the Alphabet Soup, but had to bail at the last minute due to other fandom deadlines. Never checked back to read any stories except the 2 that showed up via my F-List.)

I put in a request to AO3 for an invite code for you, because friends don't let friends resort to The Pit as their only archive.

Plus, leaving feedback at FFN is a one-way street. With LJ & AO3, I can enter a threaded discussion with an author.

I can't fully appreciate MacGyver fanfic, TBH, as I've only seen 20 minutes of 1 Mac episode.

That's very sweet of you! But I have an AO3 account. I created it a couple of years ago, during one of The Pit's blackout spells, and started moving fic there; but it gets no traffic, so I stopped bothering with it. Not much point in a platform where I can have a conversation when nobody's talking.

I hate the ff.net interface, but that's where the readers are, so I keep it up. You actually can carry on a conversation of sorts, and I have, although it does seem that very few Pit uthors bother to reply to comments. This makes no sense to me.

But LJ is much, much better. And prettier. And it cleans its room and empties the wastebaskets and is kind to small animals.

As for not being able to 'fully appreciate MacGyver' - try reading the first part of the crossover, and see if you feel left out. ;-) My take on the character is that a reader can be anywhere from hard-core fan to having a vague association with the name and a certain trope involving duct tape; but the story should still be good enough, as a story, to be entertaining.

The crossover should be viewable as a Stargate episode co-starring this long-haired dude who looks disturbingly like Jack, or as a MacGyver episode co-starring this group of odd types in BDUs, including a military type who looks disturbingly like Mac.

AO3 traffic is accumulative and increases due to the long tail effect, whereas FFN's plateaus fairly quickly. (My personal observation.) Because you're one of the few MacGyver authors on AO3, you'll notice that your 54-76 hits will increase over time as more readers discover the archive.

LJ is hands-down the best platform for individual story discussion and building community, but completely fails as a general archive to search for specific stories.

I think the experience is very different in a "rare" fandom such as MacGyver, versus a high-traffic fandom such as Stargate. In the Pit, a given Stargate story gets buried very quickly, and can only be found if one is looking (and knows what to look for, etc.). Certainly my few small Stargate items vanished swiftly.

But the rate of new posting in the MacGyver archive is very slow; as a result, I've picked up a lot of readers there, simply because when the average person goes looking for MacGyver fic, they have a good chance of finding mine (especially if they filter out everything that has a neon MARY SUE OMG sign on it). Google "MacGyver fanfic" and you won't find AO3 (although you will find a lot of pretty scary stuff).

Since I goit the crossover posted, I've had a gratifying jump in Pit traffic, and even a few comments, which has been lovely. I guess the Stargate crossover slice of that archive doesn't bury new material quite as quickly. And, from what I can tell, the Gate fans have been finding the crossover, reading and enjoying, and then following the links back to my profile and 'shopping' from there.

BTW, I'm sorry I missed out on the X-Files crossover you had hoped to do. Maybe another time? I don't think I've actually watched an entire episode of X-Files, but with a good crossover, one can often deal with that. *g*

Alas, all my plotbunnies for the Alphabet Soup crossover were *ahem* PORNOGRAPHIC. So I asked if I could make a picspam instead. Fig said that would fit in for a "related works" post, so when I finish my stargate_summer Big Bang, I'll work on my backlog. The picspam would be a character-for-character body-swap, which wouldn't require any cross-canon knowledge.
