I'm laughing hard, but not for the reasons that everyone else was.

When my little sister got engaged, she invited my future brother-in-law up to my grandmother's for Thanksgiving. He accepted, but with great trepidation, because he comes from a family that always has a big Thanksgiving spread of turkey with all the trimmings, as well as a ham and the fixin's that go with that. It's all very traditional, and having been invited to one of these extraviganzas, I can tell you that it comes to the table looking like something out of Gourmet magazine. He wasn't too sure what would happen in a Muslim Thanksgiving. Little did he know that if it was up to my stepfather, it would have looked just like his mother's Thanksgiving. As a new American, my stepfather likes American Traditional, it's my mother who would prefer a fine leg of lamb, or a roast of beef. Nonetheless, my grandmother's family were some of the first families to settle New Amsterdam, so we can manage traditional. We assured him that there would be turkey.

His face, on discovering the tofurkey in the fridge was priceless. He was only a prospective family member. He didn't want to make a scene. His tastebuds were heartbroken, but he was trying to hide it. He said nothing. We offered him some tofurkey jerkey (he loves beef jerkey). That was the point at which he knew we were having him on. We pointed out that my grandmother's house was equipped with two refridgerators, the one in the mud room just off the kitchen, where he had encountered the tofurkey, and the one in the basement where the monstrous bird that would feed us all was awaiting our attention.

Needless to say his long and appreciative language and the graceful way he handled himself proved that my sister can pick 'em. He got the official Family Seal of Approval. The tofurkey jerkey was sampled by all (and universally found to be hideous and more briney than a salt lick) and the tufurkey was used in soups and stirfries.

Well I don't have to do dishes this year because we still have a Dish Slave (she prefers to answer to Middle Daughter), but next year she'll be off at college and we will have to do our own, because The Whirlwind will be too young at 11 to be stuck doing them all.

In general I try to avoid turkey (I'm my mother's child) so this year we had the frozen turkey that was a gift from a benefactor to every worker at the Health Center, and a nice boneless leg of lamb. The plan was to have a turkey dinner on Tuesday (Beloved Husband's day off) and lamb today. The turkey was a prima donna and refused to thaw fast enough, so we reversed them. The lamb dinner on Tuesday was wonderful, everything I would have wanted in a Thanksgiving dinner. The change of plans made Middle Daughter and The Whirlwind very, very happy because they have long been unhappy about our lack of turkey orthodoxy.

So today there was turkey, there was stuffing (with 'shrooms for the grownups), sweet potatoes, green beans, brussels sprouts in a cheese-y white sauce with bits of turkey bacon, gravy, and pumpkin and apple pies for the dessert eaters. Beloved Husband did the pies, the sprouts, the green beans, and the bird, and I did the sweet potatoes, the stuffing, and the gravy. No one had to spend all day slaving in the kitchen, everyone got to eat something they hadn't prepared, and all were thankful.

Doze iss BEENS, an aye noe id!

Well, we found out a neat way to get folks to eat soy: use the Japanese name! Mumimame buttered and seasoned was accepted as a tasty new Thanksgiving staple. Score one for Mama!

Hugs and happy holidays!

If he was cooking in my kitchen...I don't think I would care what it was! LOL

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! :-)
