Well I don't have to do dishes this year because we still have a Dish Slave (she prefers to answer to Middle Daughter), but next year she'll be off at college and we will have to do our own, because The Whirlwind will be too young at 11 to be stuck doing them all.
In general I try to avoid turkey (I'm my mother's child) so this year we had the frozen turkey that was a gift from a benefactor to every worker at the Health Center, and a nice boneless leg of lamb. The plan was to have a turkey dinner on Tuesday (Beloved Husband's day off) and lamb today. The turkey was a prima donna and refused to thaw fast enough, so we reversed them. The lamb dinner on Tuesday was wonderful, everything I would have wanted in a Thanksgiving dinner. The change of plans made Middle Daughter and The Whirlwind very, very happy because they have long been unhappy about our lack of turkey orthodoxy.
So today there was turkey, there was stuffing (with 'shrooms for the grownups), sweet potatoes, green beans, brussels sprouts in a cheese-y white sauce with bits of turkey bacon, gravy, and pumpkin and apple pies for the dessert eaters. Beloved Husband did the pies, the sprouts, the green beans, and the bird, and I did the sweet potatoes, the stuffing, and the gravy. No one had to spend all day slaving in the kitchen, everyone got to eat something they hadn't prepared, and all were thankful.
