There are at least six different ways of spelling the long 'i' diphthong. Some of them use the letter i, in combination. I suspect that, to an expert ear, they're all pronounced subtley differently. I am not an expert, just an enthusiast.
As with most languages other than contemporary English, the letter 'i' is a long E, and the letter 'e' is usually a longish A.
The letter 'y' is usually pronounced as a schwa. o_O
I am rewatching seasons 2, 3 and 4 at the moment, remembering good old times... after I didn't even look at my DVDs during the past years while I was occupied otherwise...
